One of the most common questions we get from first-time buyers is not about grade or price, it is about which HS code to declare. Getting it wrong does not usually block a shipment permanently, but it is a reliable way to trigger a customs hold while the classification gets sorted out.

Why the distinction matters
These headings frequently carry different duty rates and different import requirements in destination countries, since customs authorities treat a raw agricultural product, a processed extract, and a formulated food preparation as different risk and revenue categories. Declaring a formulated essence under the extract heading, or the reverse, is one of the more common classification errors we see from buyers new to importing vanilla.
We state the correct HS code on every product page and every commercial invoice, but the final classification decision and its consequences sit with your customs broker in your destination country, since interpretation can vary slightly by jurisdiction. Confirm the code with your broker before your first shipment of a given product, not after a hold at the border.
